A beautifully restored example of the Maserati 3500 GT Vignale Spyder is currently available for sale by Harmann Classic Cars, it is one of only 227 of these cars ever built. An original GT carburetor version, this model incorporates front disc brakes and an optional factory hardtop. Finished in the classic Maserati striking color combination of Argento Luna with Tobacco leather interior.
The Maserati 3500 Vignale Spyder, designed by Gionanni Michelotti, was produced between 1957 and 1964. The 2-seater Spyder was a front engine, rear-wheel drive Grand Tourer. With a wheelbase of 2,500 mm (98.4 in) it was 4,450 mm in length and 1,635 mm wide. It had a Kerb weight of 1,440 kg (3,175 Lbs).
In the early 1950s Maserati achieved racing success and international acclaim thanks to cars like the A6GCM and the Maserati 300S. The main development of the 3500 GT however, took place in 1956 and 1957, a time when Maserati were about to enter the world of Formula 1 racing. Nevertheless, two 3500 GT prototypes were shown in March 1957 at the Salon International de l’Auto in Geneva.
Frame and chassis
The 3500 GT was built on a tube platform chassis, constructed from tubes of square, round or elliptic section of Superleggera construction. Front suspension was by double wishbone coil springs, at the rear there was a Salisbury solid axle on semi-elliptic leaf springs, with hydraulic dampers an anti-roll bar and a longitudinal torque arm. Steering was of the recirculating ball type. The hydraulic brakes were initially Girling 12″ finned drum brakes front and rear; disc brakes were later introduced on the front wheels, and finally on all four. This Maserati 3500GT Vignale Spyder is equipped with front disc brakes and the optional Borrani knock-off wire wheels as well as a factory hardtop.
This particular classic Maserati has only three owners from new. The car once belonged to the famous French Ferrari collector Jean-Claude Bajol during which time it was well cared for. 16″ Borrani wire wheels compliment this outstanding automobile. The car was restored to a high level in recent years and is located in Europe.
