1933 Alfa Romeo 6C1750 Gran Sport Series VI Castagna Cabriolet

This beautiful matching numbers Alfa Romeo is one of only 40 Sixth Series supercharged 6C1750 Gran Sport built and one of only two bodied by the Italian coachbuilder Castagna. Castagna is known for some of the most elegant designs of its time. Unlike like the frail Zagato bodies it was built to last and to provide comfort and elegance. A real top and roll up windows make it a pleasure to drive in all kind of weather. It is the ideal car for driving in the Mille Miglia where it often rains. The sixth series of the 6C1750 Grand Sport is believed to be the very best of the model.

The ownership history of this car is known from day one and well documented. The first owner, Major Kyle Mouey in England owned the car for not less than 40 years. It was exported to Australia in 1975 where it received in 1986 a complete restoration by Automobilists of Mellbourne. At that time the beautiful original color combination of cream with highlights was changed to Alfa Romeo typical red. The car competed in a few vintage reace events in Australia including the Targa Tasmania. It eventually found its way to a prominent Brazilian collection in 1997 until it was offered at the Bonhams Quail auction in 2008 with an estimate of $800,000 – 1,000,000. A Dutch collector purchased the car until it was exported to the United States.

The current owner, a well know collector with an eye for detail, elegance and beauty turned to the well know Pennsylvania based restoration shop of David L. George, a specialist in restorations of classic Alfa Romeo. It was decided to bring it back to its former glory and beauty with the original color scheme of cream with black highlights. The thorough restoration with showing the car successfully at Concours events included next to the complete down to bare metal cosmetic restoration with new soft top also mechanical rebuilt of most components.

During the restoration David L. George fitted this Alfa Romeo with new wings in the style of the elegant Castagna bodied 8C Alfa Romeo. The original wings have been preserved and refinished to match the car and could be easily put back on the car as the mounting brackets remain unaltered.

Winning the “Spirit of Mille Miglia” award at Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and second place in the pre-war European class at St. Micahel’s Concours d’Elegance in 2021 prove the high quality of the restoration.

It is rare to find a matching numbers pre-war Alfa Romeo with even the original steering box. Timeless beauty and elegance of a Mille Miglia eligible supercharged Alfa Romeo 6C1750 Gran Sport.
